Associations among growth, scrotal circumference, and visual score of beef cattle in performance tests on pasture or in feedlots R. Bras. Zootec.
Raidan,Fernanda Santos Silva; Tineo,Juan Salvador Andrade; Moraes,Mariana Mamedes de; Escarce,Thiago Campos; Araújo,Andresa Eva Melo de; Gomes,Muller Marques de Carvalho; Ventura,Henrique Torres; Toral,Fabio Luiz Buranelo.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate associations among final weight (FW), average daily gain (ADG), scrotal circumference (SC), and visual score (VS) of beef cattle in performance tests on pasture or in feedlots. Genetic parameters for FW, ADG, SC, and VS of young Nellore bulls performance-tested on pasture or in feedlots were evaluated by mixed model. The performance test and final age were considered as fixed effects and additive genetic and residual effects were considered as random effects. Additive genetic and residual variances for final weight and average daily gain were smaller on pasture than in feedlots. There was no difference between genetic and residual variances and heritability for scrotal circumference on pasture or in feedlots. Genetic...

Cold stress at the booting stage in rice induces spikelet sterility because of aberrant microspore development, which often seriously damages seed production. Some breeding lines with high cold tolerance were developed by using tropical japonica variety Silewah as a donor of cold tolerance; however, the genetic factors that confer cold tolerance of this variety have not been comprehensively analyzed. In this study, phenotypic and molecular characterization of novel cold-tolerant strains derived from crosses with Silewah was performed to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) responsible for cold tolerance. Molecular marker analysis revealed that 2 cold-tolerant strains carried chromosomal segments of Silewah at the same genomic regions on chromosomes 3, 4...

Multivariate analysis using morphometric and ultrasound information for selection of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) breeders R. Bras. Zootec.
Oliveira,Sheila Nogueira de; Ribeiro,Ricardo Pereira; Oliveira,Carlos Antonio Lopes de; Lopera-Barrero,Nelson Mauricio; Borquis,Rusbel Raul Aspilcueta; Zardin,Aline Mayra da Silva Oliveira; Souza,Felipe Pinheiro de; Poveda-Parra,Angela Rocio.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated morphometric and ultrasound information of tilapia (O. niloticus) breeders through multivariate analysis. We applied correlation, clustering, and principal component analysis to a dataset composed of information from 222 male and female breeders of the improved GIFT strain. The body weight, objective of the breeding program, showed a high positive correlation with most of the morphometric parameters. The formation of clusters indicated characteristics responsible for muscle composition and carcass weight. Some characteristics showed a high correlation, such as body weight and fillet weight (0.98 and 0.94 for females and males, respectively), and a high contribution to the explanation of data variability; of the total...

Participation frequency and performance of horses in national shows of Campolina and Mangalarga Marchador breeds R. Bras. Zootec.
Nascimento,Caline Angélica de Menezes Sá; Gonzaga,Iaçanã Valente Ferreira; Santiago,Juliano Martins; Silva,Andreza Correia da; Melo,Daniel Anderson de Souza; Lima,Diogo Luiz dos Santos; Pinto,Ana Paula Gomes; Lucena,Jorge Eduardo Cavalcante.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the participation frequency and competitive performance of Campolina and Mangalarga Marchador horses in national shows concerning marcha type, sex, and age. To that end, the trial results of national horse shows between 2007 and 2017, comprising 1,781 Campolina and 5,239 Mangalarga Marchador animals, were extracted from the databases of the breeders’ associations of each breed. The results regarding participation frequency in these events and the performance achieved by horses were grouped by breed, marcha type, sex, and age group and then subjected to frequency distribution tests. In both breeds, most animals attended only one national show. However, when the specimens were separated by marcha type, sex, and age, it...
